Preeclampsia is the second leading cause of maternal mortality but remains difficult and costly to manage outside of a health facility. Defined as hypertension (high blood pressure) during or following pregnancy, preeclampsia is among the leading causes of prematurity, stillbirth,maternal mortality, and other adverse childbirth outcomes.Pregnant women at risk of preeclampsia must monitor their blood pressure throughout their pregnancy, which may require purchasing a BP monitor for home use, visiting a pharmacy for readings, or going to see their maternal health provider – all of which can be costly or time-consuming.
