ASSEMBLING FOR IMPACT: EMPOWERING YOUNG MOTHERS IN THE PAMP’HER SUPPLY CHAIN

Mosaic Health is a Kenyan startup that exists to improve the health and lives of Kenyan girls, women, and their families through innovative healthcare solutions. But we recognize that such a mission does not end with our products. For a company to truly commit to the health and prosperity of girls and women, it must also embed this mission into its business model.

That is why we are incredibly proud to team up with Rafikistry TLC for a one-of-a-kind partnership on behalf of girls and women in Kenya. As of January 2025, all Pamp’her Period Pouches are assembled by a team of young mothers from a low-income neighborhood in Nairobi, who have all been trained to assemble Mosaic products at Rafikistry’s facilities to the highest quality standard. And, for each Pamp’her product they make, Rafikistry and the young mothers earn a portion of our sales – creating income-generating opportunities for the assembly team, a steady source of support for Rafikistry, and sustainable, socially beneficial operations for Mosaic.

Who is Rafikistry?

Rafikistry TLC is a Kenyan civil society organization that empowers young people through friendship, education, health, capacity building, and broader support. Combining the words “rafiki” (Swahili for “friend”) and “ministry”, Rafikistry creates a safe space for adolescents and young people to learn, gain practical skills, and engage with each other in a positive community environment.

One of Rafikistry’s flagship programs is focused on equipping young mothers in Nairobi (often teenagers) with life and vocational skills to help ensure economic security for themselves and their young families.

Why young mothers?

Poverty and gender inequality are tragic cycles that often reinforce each other: when teenage girls cannot afford education or other life necessities, they become reliant on men and vulnerable to early pregnancy, which forces them out of school or the workforce, thus limiting their lifetime earning potential, and so the cycle continues. However, when young women can complete their education, gain employable skills, and/or secure a stable income, the cycle breaks down, creating the possibility of both gender equality and economic prosperity for generations to come.

“At Rafikistry, we believe in empowering young mothers to rewrite their stories and secure brighter futures for themselves and their families. Our partnership with Mosaic Health on the Pamp’her Period Pouch project exemplifies the power of collaboration to drive change. Together, we are not only providing a vital product but also creating opportunities for these young women to gain skills, earn an income, and break the cycle of poverty. This initiative is more than a program—it’s a lifeline. We are proud to stand with Mosaic Health in championing hope and empowerment for these young mothers.” —Joan Njeri, Program Manager & Vision Navigator, Rafkistry TLC

What do the young mothers do?

Pamp’her Period Pouches consist of pre-packaged, single-unit menstrual health and hygiene supplies that must be manually unboxed, separated, and bundled into each Pouch before being quality-assured and machine-sealed. After multiple training-of-trainers sessions – where the Mosaic team taught Rafikistry all about our standard operating procedures (SOPs) for assembly – Rafikistry led a two-day training for a team of 12 young mothers (ages 18-22), which culminated in a certification ceremony for each new team member. Now, this team will work in groups of 4 to assemble Period Pouches according to our SOPs and quality standards, which will then be aggregated as Pamp’her inventory for the market each month.

The Pamp’her Period Pouch is an all-in-one, on-the-go menstrual care kit designed by and for Kenyan women. With a unique combination of health and hygiene supplies bundled in a cute disposal bag, each Pamp’her Pouch provides a convenient, comfortable, discreet, and eco-friendly solution for managing period needs whenever and wherever they present.

How do the young mothers earn income?

For every Pamp’her Period Pouch that is assembled by the young mothers, Mosaic provides Rafikistry with 10% of the cost of goods sold, which is allocated to the assembly team or reinvested into the partnership. The more Pouches we sell, the more opportunities the young mothers will have to gain skills and income for their families, and the more we can strengthen and enrich this mutually beneficial collaboration.
