A rapid swab test to detect premature, pre-labor rupture of membranes (P-PROM) in pregnant women
CHALLENGE
Premature, pre-labor rupture of membrane (P-PROM) is a life-threatening pregnancy complication that requires early detection and management. Defined as a breach of the fetal membrane with leakage of amniotic fluid before the onset of labor, P-PROM occurs in 3-7% of pregnancies but leads to a third of premature births and a 6-times higher rate of neonatal sepsis – both leading causes of newborn mortality. P-PROM is typically diagnosed through visual observation or expensive, time-consuming investigations at a health facility, which can lead to high rates of misdiagnosis or delays in management. Late treatment of P-PROM can lead to a 12-times higher risk of complications for mothers and newborns.
